A year after launching a revolutionary new watch with a "transparent
solar cell," CITIZEN brings out Citizen Eco drive
women's watches based on the original Citizen technology,
Eco-Drive VITRO's cover glass serves as the light-powered
watch's solar cell.
In the Citizen Eco drive women's ' model, case and band are
combined in a single, flowing, square-shaped form. By using
a crown-free electromagnetic adjustment system ( a control
button is concealed below the dial ) , Citizen Eco drive women's
VITRO watch achieves a more finished, elegant and futuristic
look.
CITIZEN developed the idea of the "transparent solar
cell" in order to broaden the possibilities of its Eco-Drive
light-powered watch technology. In most Eco-Drive models,
the solar cell is located beneath the dial. This has imposed
design restrictions since the dial must allow light to pass
through to the cell below. With the development of Citizen
Eco drive women's VITRO, however, these limitations are removed,
and the Gentlemen's model was very well received when introduced
at Basel last year.
Eco-Drive VITRO's Citizen ladies watch transparent solar
cell consists of extremely fine strips of amorphous silicon
mounted in rows on the under side of the cover glass. 6 microns
wide and set at intervals of 94 microns, they are virtually
invisible to the naked eye. There are 130 rows in the Ladies'
model and 275 rows in the Gentlemen's version. (For reference,
the thickness of a human hair is approximately 100 microns.)
