Seiko Arctura watches: The Ultimate Kinetic Collection

Basel 2003 witnesses the launch of a new signature design for Seiko's unique Kinetic technology - the Seiko Arctura watches collection.

In 1997, the first Seiko Arctura established itself as a leading edge design to complement the Kinetic movement, the world's first automatic power generating quartz watch.

Today, the new Seiko collection embodies the Arctura Kinetic personality in a design that is bold, original and unique. The lines are clear, round and strong in all three case shapes and the dials are all deep set, textured and two-layered. There is an architectural feeling to Arctura that speaks volumes of its strength, desirability and build quality.

The new Seiko Arctura Kinetic is for consumers who appreciate excellence in all its forms, and who want a watch that imposes no demands upon them - a watch that needs no battery change, that will last for years and that will never go out of fashion.

Seiko Arctura Kinetic Chronograph watch: The ultimate synthesis of Innovation, in the form of an all-new movement, and Refinement, in a dial layout that is easy-to-read and elegant. The Kinetic Chronograph is available in 5 versions, including Titanium, and will retail for around Euro 640 in stainless steel, and Euro 910 in Titanium.

Arctura Kinetic Auto Relay wristwatch: All the functions of Kinetic, but with Seiko's unique Auto Relay function. When not worn for 72 hours, it puts itself to sleep, ready to awaken at any time up to four years later, and automatically resets itself to the correct time. There are 4 models which will retail for around Euro 500.

Seiko Arctura Kinetic watches: 4 models, in solid stainless steel, with the celebrated 5M Kinetic calibre. No battery change, 6 months autonomy on a full charge and maintenance-free ease of use. Arctura Kinetic will retail for around Euro 400.

Arctura will be the focus of Seiko's global marketing campaign and will be presented in a new advertising campaign, starting in Summer 2003. Arctura and four other Seiko collections: Vivace, Premier, Rivoli and Sportura, will be the long-term star collections for the entire Seiko range.

Arctura is the ultimate embodiment of 'Innovation and Refinement', the hallmark of Seiko Kinetic watches.

The Kinetic Chronograph (calibre 7L22)

The new Seiko Kinetic Chronograph calibre is a remarkable advance in watch-making, combining the very best of traditional watch-making with the most advanced Kinetic technology. It is the fusion of tradition and modernity, of human expertise and micro- electronics, of innovation and refinement.

The Dial Design Shapes the Movement Design

To ensure that the dial design is as legible as possible and that the time-of-day and chronograph functions are as separate as possible, the Seiko design teams experimented with over 50 dial layouts before finalising the whole movement design. Thus, unlike most watches, the movement was designed to achieve a specific and unique dial layout.

The Solution to Chronograph Power Needs

Kinetic technology is perfectly suited to the needs of sportsmen because it solves the eternal problem of quartz chronographs - their high power drain. Most quartz chronographs have battery life of no more than 3 years and the potential inconvenience of battery change is even more present if the chronograph is used regularly.

The Seiko Kinetic Chronograph sports watch needs no battery change - ever. Powered solely by the movement of the wearer's body, it will provide maintenance-free timekeeping however often the chronograph is used, and the inconvenience, cost and risk of battery exchange is eliminated. Kinetic technology provides the sportsman with the perfect solution. Quartz accuracy and risk-free operation, year after year.

Functional Design and Refined Elegance

A chronograph dial is necessarily complex, but, with the unique layout and design of the Kinetic Chronograph, complexity does not mean that legibility is compromised.

  • The time of day dials are separate from the chronograph dial.
  • The chronograph second hand is offset from the centre of the dial, to increase the legibility of the hour and minute time of day dial.
  • Heart-cam snap-to-zero mechanism, for speed of operation.
  • Only by creating the movement to accommodate the dial design was it possible to achieve such clarity and functionality.
